28nm AMD Radeon HD 7900, 7800, 7600 Series Price and Specifications

Radeon HD 7900 Series will be available from January 2012

Many gamers are in a serious doubt whether to wait for HD 7000 series, or to opt for Nvidia 500 series or Radeon HD 6000 series. If everything goes fine then AMD will be marketing its Radeon HD 7000 series from January 2012. AMD Graphics chip, code-named “Tahiti”, Radeon HD 7900 series graphics cards will be powered by its Next Generation Core architecture and rest of the HD 7000 series will be manufactured on Radeon HD 6900 series’ “VLIW4″ architecture.

What’s New in HD 7900 Series

Tahiti, Radeon HD 7950 and Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards are the single GPU models that take advantage of AMD’s new architecture. AMD focuses more on GPGPU features,
  1. Radical design of the x86 virtual memory with a number of significant feature enhancements to improve the future performance of the new architecture
  2. AMD may use 384-bit memory bus with the Radeon HD 7900 series, but it has not been confirmed yet
  3. High-speed GDDR5 memory chips for AMD’s new Radeon HD 7900 series to make the easy transition to a cooler design
  4. MIMD parallelism – 4 threads per cycle per vector from different apps, per CU
  5. Support of Multiple asynchronous and independent command streams

After several discussions with different manufacturers the following ranking can be derived at

  • Radeon HD 7990>
  • Radeon HD 6990>
  • GTX 590>
  • Radeon HD 7970>
  • GeForce GTX 580>
  • Radeon HD 7950>
  • GeForce GTX 570>
  • Radeon HD 6970

  • DirectX 11.1 support
  • 3GB memory version of the HD 7970 model at $ 549 competing GeForce GTX 580 in terms of performance
  • Radeon 7950 - $ 449 competes with GeForce GTX 570

Details on Radeon HD 7800 series

Following the release of HD 7900 series in January, HD 7800 series will be released in February 2012.

  • Radeon 7870 - $ 349 competes with GeForce GTX 560Ti
  • Radeon 7850 - USD $ 249 competes with GeForce GTX 560

Details on Radeon HD 7990

In March, probably at CeBIT 2012, AMD may show Radeon HD 7990

  • Dual GPU model of HD7970 (Tahiti XT)
  • 6GB GDDR5 Memory
  • Priced at $ 749 – Will outperform both Radeon HD 6990 and GeForce GTX 590

Details on Radeon HD 7600 Series

Radeon HD 7400, 7500 and 7600 series graphics cards will have 128-bit memory bus
  • Radeon HD 7670 – Priced at $ 179
  • Radeon HD 7650 – at $ 119 level
